The jail was located on the top 9 floors of the Dade County Courthouse in downtown Miami. The young father could look down from the 21st floor, to the street below. His wife and child would come each night, stand on the sidewalk and wave to him. They would flash the car lights to signal they were there and he, in return, would strike a match from his window to let them know he was watching. Although separated by just a few miles, they were only able to see each other each Sunday, for 2 hours, through glass and wire. Writing letters became their way of communicating and 100 letters were exchanged during an 8-week period.
This was a secret my parents, family and a few close friends took to their graves. No one ever told me and I was too young to remember. And yet, a box containing the letters, yellowed newspaper clippings, faded photographs and cards of encouragement from friends was left for me after everyone was gone.
Although the crime took place more than 60 years ago, it is still as current as today's headlines. After much thought and reflection, I am ready to share this story. Controversial and uncomfortable, it is still deeply rooted in unwavering love. A horrific mistake was made leaving a family to heal, rebuild their lives and hopefully, forgive.

Ron is a friend since college, but I was not prepared for the secret he revealed. I had a secret in my family that affected me, so I know personally the damage some secrets can do. Ron's salvation in his story is how much his parents loved him and how much they loved each other. This is a story that is very personal and heart breaking. It may help others to let go of their own secrets in order to forgive without forgetting, and move forward into a life of healing.Product details

Life can be so much stranger and more complicated than fiction. One can't help but try to imagine how you would feel if you found yourself in the same circumstances that the author was thrust into when he started this incredible journey. What an amazing, emotional, roller coaster ride. So often life imitates art, and this is no exception, this story of disturbing long kept family secrets would make a wonderful movie.
What do you do when all your memories and everything you've ever known is suddenly turned upside down. Who do you trust and what do you do with the facts in front of you. Well, fortunately for us, Mr. York decided to write a book, and what a wild ride it is!
Hard to believe this is the first book he has written, as the words flow easily revealing the emotional underbelly of a man trying to come to terms with his newly discovered past. He keeps you close at his side through all the painful revelations as he peels back the many hidden layers that dealt with his family's criminal past. It can't be easy to share these personal experiences and shattered memories. Yet, at the same time, I think it will give hope to others and maybe bring them peace in their own lives. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
I couldn't put it down…
OMG! When I was first told the premise of the book, it rocked me back. Not your typical book of a son reminiscing about his parents - good or bad. I read it all in one sitting. It's written with so much empathy and love and license for the reader to come to his/her own conclusion about the facts as they are laid out evenly and without judgement...or leaving the reader with more questions that can morph into moral conundrums to evaluate against one's own life and the secrets that invariably creep into any family's saga...if not to this degree. I highly recommend this memoir of sorts, that beyond "THE SECRET" deals with family dynamics, the role of mentors in children's lives and sexual morays that may not be as "modern"or "new" as we'd like to believe.
This was beautifully written. I can't imagine the strength it took to not only process what Ron found in the box, but then to write it all out and let the world into his family's dark secret.
The unconditional love between his parents was powerful. I especially enjoyed the letters his father wrote. As a society, we rarely read anything where the man lets his guard down and shows his weakness or emotions. The letters he wrote from prison showed the raw emotion and how badly he needed his wife to be strong for the two of them, to get him through it all.
Through the letters and bits of information Ron had learned, you see how strong his mother was. She went through hell and back but didn't let anyone or anything stop her from living day to day. She had to keep going, she had her husband that probably wouldn't have survived mentally or emotionally in prison and she had to raise her young son.
I went through an emotional rollercoaster reading the story. I honestly don't know where I sit at the moment. I want to be on their side and feel for them, but we don't know the entire story (yet?) ... Was he guilty? Was it rumors that got him in trouble? Why did his wife forgive and stay? Why keep this from your son, but leave enough evidence to tell him only part of the story once they passed away? Why doesn't he say he admit to doing something horrible, or plead his innocence? Why does the court system jerk them around so much?
Ron encourages the reader to keep an open mind and not judge too quickly. You will flip flop as you read through the story and letters.
I look forward to reading more of the story if there is one and I wish Ron all the best in his research. I do hope he can uncover more, not just to write the story, but for him to have closure.
Well written.but we ordered it because we knew the people well.
This was a very painful book to read. In some ways, it seems like our judicial and law enforcement agencies were so naive. The author had a heavy burden to bear to discover his family's hidden secrets. To uncover this tragedy and the mountains of lies told to protect the secret would be heartbreaking. To be caught in the forceful current without a life jacket is where the author finds himself. Plenty of questions but no answers.
Myself, I thought the correspondence became trite, boring, and meaningless. The one question is WHY? Why keep them and cause so much pain and anguish to your child? Destroy the evidence and let dogs die.
The author is my friend. This wrenching narrative left me with many questions, although mine cannot measure up to what he still must be asking. A tale of unconditional love, heartbeak and redemption that moved me deeply.
Thank you, Ron, for opening up your heart and life to us!!! We all have a great appreciation for you and the struggles you have had, and those of your family members. I'm sorry that your relationships with family and friends were strained, not because of anything you were a part of, but those you didn't know about!
